Time for a new look – new image

Guilty – yes guilty as charged.

What am I guilty of? Being like most people and waiting forever for a new business portrait.

Yes, I used every excuse in the book.

- The old picture is just fine. And it was/is. In fact I still like it. A dear friend and very talented photographer created it for me. But, I don’t look like that any more.

- I need to loose some weight. Uhhhhh, well I still need to loose some weight. But I have lost some and need to celebrate that!

These are just two of the excuses. I could list more, but I doubt you want to read a novel.

As an artist, I wanted my business portrait to be more reflective than most are.

It is summer and like most women, I decided it was time for a new hairdo. I love the one that Rowena at Salon on 10 did for me. But it made me realize it was definitely time for a new portrait of me. A road trip to one of my favorite photography locations and I had a new image showing off my new image.

This got me thinking even more. I know there are other business people, actors/artists and others that need a quality image to help promote their business or themselves. And I will bet there are many out there using pictures that they cannot remember how long it has been since it was created.

So, I am offering a special business portrait promotion during the month of July. For $100 you will receive two (I so wanted to do the classic “not one, but two” line here) business portraits to use to market and promote your business.

Everyone needs a professional traditional business headshot in their files.

The first one will be the all purpose business headshot. This is always a good image to have ready to use for a variety of things, such as: press releases, marketing materials and speaking packets if you do presentations to groups.

The second one will show more of your personality and/or related to your profession and what you do. We will discuss this and come up with the perfect idea for this portrait. This image will be great to use in your blog or just do a blog post on it, website, in your newsletter and brochures. Or you could just use it on your social media sites.

When you call to schedule your session, I will share my secret on what is the most overlooked thing to consider when having a business portrait done. This secret could improve the impact of your marketing materials.

So take out your business card or other marketing materials that has your picture on it. How old is that image? Do you still have that same hairstyle? Would the public recognize you on the street from that image?

Scythian rocked MerleFest

My career has given me many opportunities to meet many famous and interesting people and to see many things and places that well, most people only see in my images. It has been a pleasure and honor to have the chance to photograph each one of them. You can imagine the honor it was when I was asked to be an official photographer for the 2011 MerleFest. It allowed me to do something I had only hoped to do.

Doc Watson

Growing up in North Carolina and being a bit of a country girl, I remember listening to bluegrass and county music since I was a kid. You did not grow up around here if you did not know who Doc and Merle Watson are.

As a photographer, getting to photograph someone like Doc Watson is such an honor. Being a photographer for MerleFest gave me the opportunity of creating a memory I’ll cherish forever and I have the photograph of Doc to remind me of it.

Photographing MerleFest provided many opportunities for wonderful memories to be created. It also exposed me to some incredibly talented artists and bands that I love to listen to now.

Scythian

Over the years, I have developed a love for a variety of music. Folk and Americana are some of my favorites. MerleFest introduced me to the group Scythian. I became a quick fan of his group. They are AWESOME! and really nice too. I just love their music and energy. They give an incredible live performance that can’t help but leave you pumped.

Lost Bayou Ramblers rocked the place too and I could listen to the harmonies of the Wailin’ Jennys all day. So many talented artists that I had the pleasure to get to listen to while working, including Josh Williams Band, Sarah Jarosz (watch out for this young lady), Jeff and Vida and Balsam Range to name just a few.

Doobie Brothers

I even had the pleasure of photographing some local talent; The Neighbors and The Sigmon Stringers. I’ll never forget the Doobie Brothers rocking the place and Lyle Lovett has such an amazing voice, personality and charm.

I tell you it was a lot of fun getting to do what I love, photography, while listening to so much incredible music. Memories I’ll never forget. I can honestly say, it was an honor, privilege and a whole lot of fun photographing MerleFest.

Wow, I just realized I have been blogging a lot lately about Relay For Life. But, that is okay. It is something I am passionate about. Many of my family, friends and clients (including some of you) have battled cancer. I am proud to do what I can to help beat cancer.

This year, the two Relays in Burke County joined together to create an incredible force against cancer. I was honored to be able to be the photographer for the event and meet so many of you. It was so good to see and get hugs from so many friends.

I am working on the DVD slideshow of the images from this year’s Relay and will have it ready for the wrap up meeting. But, I thought I would share just a few of the images from an incredible event.

Remember, you can purchase the full DVD slideshow for a $10 donation when it is ready so you can remember that wonderful afternoon (I am still working on getting it to all fit on one DVD). Enjoy this little trailer (as they call it I the movie industry) until then.

This Friday, I get to do the same thing with the Catawba County Relay For Life at the Southside Park in Newton. 2010 Valdese Relay For Life

Do you relay? I do! In fact it is very special to me. Today, I have the pleasure to attend and photograph the 2011 Burke County Relay For Life at Freedom High School.

For the past three years, I have had this pleasure for the Valdese Relay For Life. This year, all Burke County will be celebrating, remembering and fighting back together. I am proud to be just a small part of it.

As in the past I will be there photographing the event and then creating a DVD so we can share in this special night for years to come. If you would like to purchase a copy of the 2011 Burke County Relay For Life DVD, you can order one at the Survivors table. They are $10 each and all (every penny) goes to the American Cancer Society.

Sarah and I were honored to be able to attend the Survivor Dinner last Saturday night in Valdese. It was a pleasure to get to meet so many of you and to see many of you back celebrating another year!

As I said, this is something very special to me. My first Relay For Life occurred while my grandmother was in the hospital dying of cancer. I left her bedside that night to go do my time on the track. I remember there was a light rain, but that did not stop the relayers.

If you are in the area, come by Freedom High School in Morganton and help us beat cancer. We are making strides, but we can’t stop now.

CPP?

I was asked what the initials, CPP behind my name stood for. It stands for Certified Professional Photographer. I had to go through a rigorous program that included passing an extensive written exam and passing the approval of submitted work from a pristine panel of judges. It is similar to receiving your CPA or National Boards for teachers.

Not many photographers are willing to put themselves through the ordeal of becoming certified. Many do not pass it and some fail to maintain the requirements to keep their certification during each 5 year renewal period. Read more on the certification process and what it means for you as a client.

There are only two Certified Professional Photographers in Burke County (me and Chris Garner) and just a few others in our surrounding area. We all worked hard to earn our certification.

If you use someone other than me (why I don’t know) for your family portraits or even the images that will represent your business, then take a moment and ask them if they are a Certified Professional Photographer. You can see if they are certified on this website.

Does it sound as if I am proud to be a Certified Professional Photographer? Well, yeah I am. Soon there will be even more initials after my name, but we will save that story for another day.

On Saturday, June 4th, I will be teaching a beginners photography class at the studio. We will go over simply steps to improve your photography and I will answer your questions about your photography.

Class will begin at 9:30am on Saturday June 4th and is scheduled to go through 12:30pm, but if we need to go longer and you can stay we can do that.

With any job there are both good and bad things. Being a photographer is no exception. Fortunately, the goods are very sweet like having the pleasure to watch a family grow. That is why I love my job.

This sweet adorable sleeping baby is Finley. I have photographed his big sister and brother since they were his age. I can already tell that Finley is going to be just as sweet and fun as they are.

Around this time of the year, it I easy to think of Easter eggs filled with goodies and cute bunny rabbits. And I’ll admit we had some pretty cute bunnies and really adorable kids for our Easter portraits this year.

But Easter is so much more than cute bunnies. It is to remember the ultimate sacrifice our Lord Savior did for us. I am so thankful that Jesus loves me and you enough to die on the cross for our salvation.

This weekend as you are enjoying your chocolate bunny be sure and remember to thank the Lord for His love. If you need a church to attend Easter Service, let me know. You are always welcomed at ours.

The other day Sarah was running her mouth; nothing new, right. Well, she started saying that she could out market me and get more sessions than me.

Those of you that know me know I love a good challenge. So guess what? ----- IT IS ON!

From now till the end of April, it is Sarah against Mom. The one that gets more people to book a session between now and the end of April gets the title of Chief Marketer. Plus, to make it really interesting we have waged a little bet.

If I, and I will, get more sessions booked (aka WIN!!!!), then not only do I get to have bragging rights, but she has to keep her clothes organized “my way” for six months. Now if by some fluke Sarah wins, then she will get something based on how many sessions she gets booked. Minimum is $25 and she could earn up to an iPod Touch.

So how can you help me win and keep Sarah’s clothes neatly organized (those that have seen my closet and drawers know this is a big deal to me)? Simply join Team Mom!!!! And of course call to schedule a session or get a friend to schedule a session. When you call be sure and let me know you are part of Team Mom so I can get credit for the session.

Now the rules state I must let you know that if you want Sarah to win then you need to join Team Sarah (boo boo boo) and let me know you are part of Team Sarah when you call to schedule your session.

Who’s up for a parade?

As a mom, I get the joy of watching Sarah to learn, enjoy and grow. As a photographer, sometimes I get to do that and participate at the same time. When I can, I try to help out at Sarah’s school. I have to admit it is very rewarding and I highly recommend it to all parents and business owners.

A recent event I was able to help out with was the annual Dr. Suess birthday- Read Across America parade. I spent the morning helping blow up and tie hundreds of balloons for the balloon launch with some fellow moms (oh, and Thurman Roe). Every year at the end of the parade, the students all go out on the football field and pledge to always read and they do a mass balloon launch. It is an awesome site to watch.

Tied on the end of each balloon is a note about Dr Suess and reading. It also includes the student’s name and school information. Each year the students are amazed at finding out how far their balloon went when they get a note from the person that found it. This year several have been found around the Statesville area.

A cowboy song

This year I have had the pleasure of watching Sarah find something she seems to really enjoy; chorus. At the Soaring Eagles program at George Hildebrand Elementary School, the chorus gave a great performance. It was a cowboy theme and the kids seemed to enjoy it.

Session times added on Monday for the Easter Bunny portrait sessions

I told you the kids and bunnies are simply adorable this year. This is an image from one of the sessions so far this year. I love my job. I get to photograph the cutest kids, oh and bunnies too.

Every year I look forward to the Easter Bunny sessions. Not only are they a blast to photograph, but the kids are absolutely adorable. Some how this year, the kids are even more adorable and the bunnies are too. So everyone can join in on the fun, I have added more session times on Monday.

I can’t tell you how sweet it is to get to watch the kids interact with the bunnies. The sparkle in their eyes, the excitement in their voice and even down to the blowing them kisses and them it will be alright they are just going to go change into their Easter dress. Megan was so cute doing that today. All of the kids have been simply adorable.

We have the bunnies at least into Tuesday, so I have decided to keep the fun going. Session times have been set up for Monday for the Easter Bunny sessions. This gives everyone a chance to come and be photographed with the bunnies and of course have snuggle time. Yes, there is snuggle time scheduled into each session.

Some of the session times available on Monday have already been booked. So call the studio 828-397-6055 to schedule your snuggle time with the bunnies. If you miss this chance, you will have to wait a whole year to be photographed with the bunnies. But of course, I photograph the cutest kids there are all year round.

The Easter Bunny sessions are always some of the most fun ones we do each year. I just love watching the kids (and parents) play with the bunnies. This year I believe we have the cutest bunnies we have ever had.

We had Friday, March 19^th and Saturday, March 20^th slated for Easter Bunny sessions, but due to demand we have added session times on Thursday. That is right, we now have even more snuggle time with the bunnies available.

We have a brand new set just for the bunnies this year also. It is so pretty.

The special session fee for the Easter Bunny sessions is only $25. Special portrait packages are available for $75 and include an 8x10, 2-5x7s and 8-wallets. We have some other special items available as well.

Inspired photography

I spent the last week at the annual Professional Photographers of North Carolina’s (PPNC) Convention in Durham. It is a week I always enjoy and look forward to.

Not only do I get to spend time with my PPNC family; I get to learn and be inspired by some of the best photographers across the country. This year I had the pleasure of spending some time with Jennifer Hudson. I came away from Jennifer’s class definitely inspired.

Jennifer shared some techniques that spoke to my artistic soul. Some of these I have used in the past with my fine art and nature photography. Some were brand new and have me exited to incorporate them into my portraits.

In the near future, I will need some models so I can hone some of the new skills I have learned. Photography is a craft and requires constant work, time and effort to grow and improve.

Say Macaroni & Cheese

Recently, a friend told me about a great new website for moms in the Hickory area, Macaroni Kid – Hickory. This site is a great resource for moms and I wanted to share it with you.

Macaroni Kid – Hickory is the local version of the national Macaroni Kid website. Both sites are very helpful with tips, craft ideas and other resources for moms.

They each send out a weekly newsletter packed full of information and they have a forum that moms can use to communicate with each other. Kara, the local Publisher-mom, does a great job adding local flare to the Hickory site.

On the Hickory site, you can find additional resources as well as a calendar of events around Hickory and a list of things to do. I check the site and calendar weekly to see what we can do as a family. I just wished Macaroni Kid was around when Sarah was younger.

Valentine’s weekend I had the pleasure of teaming up with my favorite steakhouse, Texas Roadhouse, Whitfield’s Florist and Hair It Is Salon as part of their Valentine’s weekend. We each gave something for a special Valentine package that was won by Eddie Taylor. Eddie will receive a 16x20 portrait from the studio. Congrats Eddie!

I got to spend Valentine’s night with everyone at Texas Roadhouse. That place was rockin’. Everyone I met was so sweet and the staff was bringing the food to every table I was talking to.

While I was there I captured some of the wonderful folks out celebrating the day of love with my camera. Here is a little video so you can join in on all of the fun we had.

School's Out

While picking up Sarah from school today, I noticed spring school picture day is coming up. If you are like me, the school pictures are quite lame. Sarah doesn’t even like them.

I know I tried to get rid of all of my school pictures and still try to hide when mom manages to pull out another one she must have hid from me. I don’t want Sarah to have to go through the same thing of school pictures being the memories of her school years she has to show her kids in the future. I don’t want that to be true of your kids either.

I remember when I was a kid, the days we were out of school were always a lot of fun. Just because I am a grown up doesn’t mean that has to change, right?

School’s out Monday, Feb 21^st and I want to have some fun. So let’s play!

New Year - New Look

With the new year comes a new look for Denise Clay Photography. You may have seen the new logo sneaking in on a few things the past few weeks, but the official roll out for the new look is with the start of the year. In addition to the new logo, there will be some other changes at DCP in 2011 that I think you are going to really love. More on them later.

Wait, my homework requires me to have fun and play. So let's go!

What am I talking about? I have given myself a self assignment for 2011. My assignment is I am going to aim to photograph something for pure fun every day or at least most days. Then once a week I am going to share one or more of those images here on the blog.

I may even go into my archives and share some of the images I have created in the past. Like this one. Does anyone know which pier is seen in this image?

I am not into setting resolutions very much, but I am tackling something this year that I never have before and I would like for you to join me. This year I in training

This spring I will participating in my first ever 5k. This is a special 5k and there is a very personal reason for me doing this.

I have a personal blog where I have written about this special 5k and my reason there. I will also be blogging there about my progress during my training. The good thing is I will get back in shape doing this.

One little girl’s Christmas wish

It is that time of the year; we hustle around trying to find the perfect gift for everyone on our list. In between checking his list twice, Santa is going around spending time with all of the kids to find out exactly what they want. They climb up on Santa’s lap and tell him their Christmas wish when he asks “What do you want for Christmas?”

Like most larger kids (aka adults), I have been mentally working on my Christmas wish list too. For the most part, my Christmas wish list does not include materialistic items. There are no baby dolls or latest computer games on there.

Instead, my Christmas wish is for simple things; good health for the next year, continue getting to do what I love (photographing your family), spending time with my family and friends and things like that. Well, okay a new Nikon camera or Mac computer under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning – all I can say is now we are talking Santa.

With the whisper of one little girl, my Christmas wish was changed.

I was at a store recently and Santa was there with a line of kids waiting to tell him all of the cool toys they wanted this year when he asked them “What do you want for Christmas?” I overheard the response of one little girl.

“I know you can't do anything, but all I want is a happy family” was her reply.

I have never seen this girl before and have no clue who she is or her story, but her few words that made up her Christmas wish has changed mine. My Christmas wish now is that this little girl’s family finds peace and the happiness that she so longs for and that no other kid ever has to wish this for their Christmas wish.

May the Lord Bless this little girl and grant her Christmas wish.

Hitting the links - it's for the dogs

Hitting this links - well it is for the dogs and cats. Recently I had the pleasure to help out the Burke County Friends For Animals by photographing their annual golf tournament. The weather was perfect. We could not have asked for a better day.

I spend the whole day out there. Don't worry, I was strictly photographing and not attempting to hit any small white balls. I am sure the other golfers were glad of that.
Me and my friend Marcus rode around the course over at Quaker Meadows Golf Course, photographing the golfers. They all seemed to have a great day out on the course. And BCFFA raised some money to help our furry friends. They do a great job at BCFFA. Can't wait till next year's tournament. Hope to see you on the course. Here is a short video of the day.

Giving back

The past few months I have been busy traveling, teaching and giving programs to other professional photographers as well as putting on a major two day workshop. Since the end of August, I have traveled across the state twice to give programs.
At the end of August, I traveled down to Greenville, NC to give a program to the Professional Imaging Group of Eastern North Carolina (PIGOENC). The PIGOENC group is a Professional Photographers of America (PPA) regional affiliate association. It was great to share with many photographers I have learned from over the years and to meet some new friends.

          A few weeks ago, I traveled to Durham to give the program to another PPA affiliate group, the Photographic Society of the Triangle (PST). I had so much fun with this group. It is already in the plans for me to go back next year to do another program for them in 2011.
          Then last Monday, photographers from North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina came to the studio for a PPA's Super Monday program I taught. I participated in several Super Mondays in the past as a student and it was great to be able to share what I know to other photographers.
   I also had the honor of serving as the Chairperson for the Professional Photographers of NC (PPNC)'s Western Seminar in October as well. PPNC has meant a lot to me and my career as a photographer and it was indeed an honor to give back. We had two incredible days of learning from international and national speaking photographers. We had fun, learned and even donated some food for the local food pantry.
        All of my teaching and workshops are done till next year. I enjoy spending time and sharing what I can with my fellow professional photographers, but I am looking forward to some time at home. Next year looks like it is going to be busy again though. It appears I will be giving programs not only in NC, but in Georgia and possibly Virginia.

Merry Christmas? It is the beginning of November. We haven't even had Thanksgiving turkey. Don't worry we will do that, but it is time for Christmas sessions at the studio.

This year we have not one, not two, but three set to choose from. Can you tell I am really in the Christmas spirit this year? We have a brand new Red & White Christmas that has a very contemporary look to it. The Winter Wonderland was so popular last year that it is returning. And it has been several years, but the one and only Santa's Chimney is back.

     Santa's Chimney is so awesome. It is perfect for young kids that can sit up and bigger kids that are too big to fit in the chimney (no we don't know how Santa does it either). For the bigger kids, we have a special trick to where they can sneak up and catch Santa going down the chimney. It is also great for the whole family too.
      The session fee for any of the special Christmas sessions is only $25. We have special packages available only for these Christmas sessions. And you can even order custom Christmas cards from these sessions as well. This year's cards are going to be so great. Sweet baby Claire

Here is another sweet sleeping baby. I just love newborns. Claire was only a couple days old and had just gotten home from the hospital when I had the pleasure to go meet her and photograph her at her house.

Claire's dad is known for his cheesecakes, so we had some fun in the kitchen. I love cheesecake, but I doubt any Claire's dad whips up is as sweet as her.

Welcome Marshall

Is there anything sweeter than a sleeping baby? This is baby Marshall. I have a feeling this boy is going to break some young girls hearts in the future. He looks so precious here. I love my job.

Alabama fans may have something to worry about in about 18 years. Yes, Marshall is one of those Tennessee Fanatics. For years I have photographed his big sisters in Tennessee stuff. Can't wait to have some fun with Marshall in all of the Volunteer gear.

Growning up

      Maybe it is the mom in me, but I have noticed over the years that the kids I photograph become almost like my own kids to me. This is especially true for those kids I photograph since they were just babies.
    The beauty of this is I get to send them back home with mom and dad after the session. Hum, that is starting to sound like a grandmaw. Let's move on to the point of the blog post before I grow any older.
       I have photographed both of these two girls since before they were even born; we did a maternity sessions for both. And I have had the pleasure of watching these two girls grow up.
      Now I know Ella and Nora are not grown up. They are still young girls, but it has been really cool to be a part of their lives.
      Ella is in school now and Nora is helping mom with their new brother. Yes, they have a little brother to torture, um I mean watch now.

     While we were doing the maternity session for Marshall, I spent some time photographing the girls. The girls were so much fun that day.
      We kept it simple and just focus on the different personalities of the girls. They each played it up for the camera, but still showed their sweet quiet side as well.
      I just love these two images from the session. The first one shows the love between the two sisters. This one shows the shy quiet side of Nora.
      While I was there talking to their mom, Ella showed just what a big girl she has become. She took care of her little sister without even having to be asked.
      I was so proud of Ella. She has grown up into a great big sister.

Loaves and Fishes

One of my favorite stories in the Bible is when Jesus fed thousands of people with just a loaf of bread and two fishes. This weekend I had the chance to be a part of something special.

The 2010 Professional Photographers of North Carolina Western Seminar was held this past weekend at the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock. It was an honor to serve as the Seminar Chairman for this workshop.

Being the Chairman took up a lot of my time lately, but I really enjoyed spending time with my PPNC family and the speakers were awesome. But while were we up there, we got to help some families that are going through tough times.

We held a food drive and donated the food to the Hunger and Health Coalition. Their food pantry distributes food to over 750 families in Watauga County every month and one out of every three people that receives the food is a child.

We each brought a few cans, boxes or bags of non-perishable food to the seminar and together we donated 401 pounds of food. It was a really cool site to see the pile of food build. My friend James Dockery captured this image of my other dear friend Sherry Coffey stacking the food in a neat design.

Keep them fleas and ticks off me!

I don't know about you, but the ticks have been terrible this summer. It seems we have gotten more ticks off of Reno this summer than ever before.
So I asked my friend Liz Hueber, a volunteer at the adoption center for the Burke County Friends For Animals, if she knew of an organic method of keeping ticks and even fleas off dogs. She sent me a recipe that not only for dogs, but humans too. I thought I would share what she sent with you.

Homemade, organic flea and tick repellent for dogs (and humans)

Summer is here and with it, once again, those annoying little pest, namely fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Various commercially made repellents are available, but one should always be cautious with it comes to the toxic nature of many "kill all" chemical mixtures.

After some research on the web, I found the following recipe for an organic, homemade insect repellent. Aside from being less toxic than commercial products; this mixture is also organic and can be made with fairly benign ingredients.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

10 to 25 drops of Rose Geranium essential oil

Mix ingredients in a glass jar and shake well to blend. Keep in a dark bottle in a cool place, shelf life is approximately 6 months. To use, dab a few drops on your skin and clothing as well as your dog' coat and collar.

Important:

Use essential oil sparingly. Start with the lowest possible dose (10 drops) and only increase if necessary.
Try a few drops on your skin and your dog's coat and watch for an allergic reaction before apply to your arms and legs and the rest of your dog.
If you or your dog is allergic to Geraniums, you can try essential oils of cinnamon or citron instead.
Essential oils should not be used on cats in any concentration.
As with all medications; you should use as little as possible to achieve the desired effect.

Caution:

Some recipes on the web use Pennyroyal (essential oil or leaves). Do not use Pennyroyal if anyone in your home is or may become pregnant (humans and pets). Do not use Pennyroyal on cats or if cats are in the home.

Liz Hueber, volunteer - BCFFA

Thanks Liz! The Burke County Friends For Animals has helped find loving homes for over ten thousand animals that once was destined to be euthanized. The adoption center up in Morganton has become the largest no-kill animal shelter in Western North Carolina.
Through the wonderful staff and volunteers like Liz, the adoption center takes care of hundreds of animals and in some cases even nurses them back to health. If you would like to help to BCFFA, there are several things you can do.

Consider adopting an animal from the adoption center. Not only would you be adding a loving and caring member to your family you will be opening up a spot for the adoption center and allow BCFFA to save another animal from being euthanized.
Volunteer to go to the adoption center and help out with the animals. They are all loving and caring and just need some attention.
Donate some pocket change; or even more if possible. The adoption center always can use funds to help with expenses or additional purchases needed to truly take care of the animals. Currently, the adoption center is working to raise $5,000 to purchase a commercial washer. The other washers they have been using, just wear out too fast and the furry friends there need clean bedding to keep from sleeping on the concrete.

Mike & Amy

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure and fun of photographing Mike & Amy's wedding. It was simply beautiful. The best part is I have gotten to know two wonderful people.

Their passion and love for each other is unreal. That was obvious during the engagement session we did in downtown Newton. Now that was a fun session.

I just love Amy's dress. It was so vintage and went perfectly in the setting. She reminded me of one of the beautiful Hollywood movie stars back in the 30s and 40s.

First family portrait

This was a special treat. I have known Stacey for years and TJ even longer. I even photographed their senior portraits when they were high school seniors.

Since they have met, we have done several portrait sessions of the two of them. It has been a pleasure watching their love grow for each other.

Recently, they got married and Stace contacted me for their first family portrait. No, there are no little ones on the way; yet. But they do have their big baby, Shelby.

Shelby is a sweetie and was a perfect model during the portrait session. Best wishes to Stace and TJ and I am now looking forward to watching your family grow in the years to come.

Good morning sunshine

I'll admit I am a morning person. I love getting up and spending time alone in the early morning and watching God's beauty as the sun rises. I call this time "having breakfast with God."

It seems these days I have fewer and fewer opportunity to have breakfast with God out in His wonder. Yesterday, I got that chance and was able to go spend some time at sunrise in a friend's sunflower patch.

Needless to say I loved it. I started my photography out photographing our beautiful world. Any chance I can get back to my roots, I just love. These times seem to charge my batteries more than any thing else.

Today is a special day. It is our country's birthday. We are so blessed to live in a country that gives us the freedom to do what we love. That is what I do every day I go to work. I love having the opportunity to be just a small part of your lives by being able to preserve your special memories through my photography.

I hope each of you have spent some time this weekend with the ones you love. After all, our loved ones are the most important things in our lives.

Summer has snuck up on us and fast. Seems like just the other day we were out making snowmen and trying to see just how fast we can go down a snow-covered hill now that we have gotten older. Now we are wearing shorts and sweating.

In the other shoe

Sometimes it is good for all of us to spend some time in someone else’s shoes. I got to do just that this past weekend.

Stacey and TJ got married this past weekend and I got to attend as a guest. Stacey has been like a member of our family for almost five years now. She is like a big sister to Sarah. TJ is actual family.

This is the first wedding in a two or three years I was not working as a photographer. It was nice to be able to be just a family member attending the beautiful ceremony. I’ll admit it was nice not watching Stace officially becoming part of the family through the lens of my camera.

Stace and TJ’s wedding was a perfect opportunity for me to spend some time in the other person’s shoes. As a wedding photographer I try to always put the bride and groom and their family and guest first and do what I can to make their day as special as it can be. As a guest at the wedding this weekend I was able to experience what it is like to wait while the family group formals are being photographed.

I know the formal group photographs are not the fun part of a wedding, but they are very important if not now – they will be in the future. That is why as a photographer I try my best to create the family group photographs quick, fun and as relaxing as possible. I know you want to get back to your family and friends and have fun.

Some newer photographers put down doing the formal family groups photographs. They often say they are boring and dull. Family group formals are a lot of work, but as I said they are very important. Looking at my own wedding album, the images of me and my grandparents were the last ones taken of me and them before they died. I often think that some people just don’t understand this and that some of the newer photographers avoid the family group photographs because they haven’t had the proper training to photograph them. That is a shame, because it is a disservice not to provide them for the couple and their families.

I have often said it is important for photographers to get away from behind their cameras and remember what it is like for those on the other side of their lens. It only makes us better photographers. Speaking of getting on the other side of the camera; I need to contact our family photographer and schedule a portrait session for a new family portrait.

Field Grass is perfect

I am not sure how, but I have managed to keep hubby from bush hogging the grass out in the fields and it is just perfect for portraits now. I have begged him (actually I have hidden the tractor keys) to give me a couple of weeks for portraits out there before he cuts the field grass all down.

I love photographing out in the fields especially when the grass is perfect like it is now. It is a perfect relaxed setting for families, seniors, couples, brides (grooms can join too) and even kids. We might even be able to get the tractor out there for some as well.

But we will need to have sessions on the calendar or hubby may start cutting it all down. I know I can’t keep hiding the keys forever, so we better get these sessions done soon.

Here it is another holiday. Sarah is out of school, the banks and post offices are closed. But this is not just another day off from work.

This is a special day. A day to stop, reflect and give thanks to all of those that has served our country and gave the greatest sacrifice. A thanks to all of those that allow me the freedom to do the job I love and raise my daughter in the land of the free.

On this Memorial Day, may we all remember how we are able the freedom we have. It is from the men and women that fought and many that died for our freedom. Two words do not seem to be a fitting tribute to show my gratitude, but they are what I have to give. Thank You!

May everyone have a wonderful Memorial Day and may God watch over and protect those who are serving now to protect our freedom.

On Easter Sunday, we all met at my mom’s for a family cookout. We all had great time. Seems we all get along better now that we have grown up than we did as kids. Maybe it is because we no longer live under the same roof???

I started looking through a box of old photographs my mom keeps in her room. Sitting and looking at old photographs has always been a favorite pastime of mine. Who would have imaged that?

In the box was an old photograph I have seen many times. It is one of my favorites. It is the one you see here. The young mother is my grandmother and the child is my mom.

I am very fortunate to still have my mom to go with on one of our many excursions. I do miss my grandmother though.

I am grateful that grandmother went to a portrait studio and had this portrait of her and my mom made XX (mom won’t let me say exactly how many) years ago. If she had not, then I would never have seen what she and my mom looked like at that age.

Grandmother was beautiful. BTW, the look on mom’s face is one I see all the time on Sarah’s when I tell her to do something.

I am going to take the time to restore this image for mom and give it to her for her birthday. I think she would like to have this memory framed where she can enjoy it everyday.

There were no computers back when this image was made. So I am glad there is an actual photograph of this memory. The paper is a little worn, but I am not sure I would have ever seen it if it was on a computer disk sitting on a shelf somewhere.

In the box are more old family photos, some from other studios and some just family snapshots. I love them all; well maybe not some of the ones of me in a puffy perm. But I am glad this portrait was done by a photographer that knew what they were doing.

The highlights are not blown out and the photograph was not poorly lit (like what many photographers these days call “creative” or “natural” lighting), nor was any special technique needed to fix the image. Since the photographer knew what he/she (more than likely a he back then) was doing, I am able to look into both of their eyes and even see that sparkle in grandmother’s eye.

I remember that sparkle. Maybe I’ll frame me up one of these memories too.

Easter Sessions

This is always one of my favorite times of the year. Spring flowers are beginning to poke up through the ground and the trees are starting to show off their blossoms. At the studio we get to spend some time with the bunnies.

I love the bunny sessions at the studio. Watching the kids play with the bunnies and the joy in their eyes. The bunnies are cute, but the kids are cuter (is that even a word?).

The bunnies were a bit active this year; which made the sessions a bit interesting. Especially for Sarah who had to chase the bunnies down during the sessions. But we had a great time and created some great images. I posted some of the ones from the bunny sessions on the facebook fanpage. I will try to post more a little later.

Easter Sunday is April 4^th and is a special time to rejoice and honor our Savior Jesus Christ. I am thankful for what He has done for me and for all of us. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

Spring is hoppin’ in

I know, I know – lame pun. Seriously, spring is just around the corner and I know I am ready. It is almost time to plant the veggie garden and enjoy the pretty flowers blooming in the flowerbeds.

Spring starts this Saturday and to celebrate, we have the bunnies here at the studio for Easter sessions. Here is a portrait of the bunnies for this year. Aren’t they just too cute?

The bunnies are back

With all of the snow we have had this year, I am ready for spring. Beautiful flowers and sunny days is what I am wishing for. I definitely need to get out and start working in the flower beds.

Spring starts Saturday, March 20th and the bunnies will be back at the studio to kick off spring. A new set is being designed for this year’s bunny sessions.

The bunny sessions are some of my favorite. I love seeing the excitement of the kids (and parents) when they first pet the soft and cuddly bunnies. The joy in the kids’ eyes is precious.

Session fee is $25 and special bunny packages are only $75. Portrait packages will be back before Easter.

Don’t forget that if you refer a friend and they come for a bunny session, your bunny session fee is on me.

Stephanie’s tips on helping your child succeed in school

EOG testing is sneaking up on us fast. It is hard to believe that March winds are already blowing. I am fortunate to have many wonderful educators as friends and clients. So I asked one for some tips on how we as parents can help our kids do better in school and on the EOGs.

I asked Stephanie Eddings to share some of her tips. Stephanie is a fifth grade teacher at Ball Creek Elementary School.

David Letterman has his top ten, but we have Stephanie’s top nine on how to help your child succeed in school. Thanks Stephanie for your tips. I know I will be using them with Sarah.

Stephanie’s top nine tips on helping your child succeed in school:
1. Get a good night sleep and eat breakfast every morning.
2. Have your child explain their homework to you. It is a good indication on whether or not they understand what they have learned in school. If they have no homework, have them explain what they have learned that day.
3. Read all the time. Magazines, newspapers, books, etc. and ask questions about what they read. It's also a good idea to set up times to where everyone in the house reads. This helps your child to develop a love for reading because they see their parents wanting to read also.
4. Be on time to school everyday and keep the absences to a minimum.
5. Communicate with your child's teacher on a regular basis.
6. Have high expectations of your child and make sure they know your expectations.
7. Make a place where your child/ren go every day after school at the same time to do their homework and read.
8. Limit the amount of TV and video game time to provide opportunities to use their imaginations.
9. Play math games with your child to help them master addition/subtraction facts for the lower grades and multiplication/division for the upper grades.

What happen in Durham…

Last week I attended the Professional Photographers of North Carolina (PPNC) convention in Durham. The theme this year was a play off Vegas – Viva PPNC!

Like my time in Vegas, there was very little sleeping that occurred, but a whole lot of learning and getting inspired. There were some great times with some of my photography buddies as well. Around 400 of them attended the convention.

PPNC is one of the strongest photography associations in the nation. We always have on of the best conventions each year with the top photographers from the country speaking.

But the learning and inspiration I get while at the convention is just the start of what I receive as being a member of PPNC. The greatest treasure I receive from being part of PPNC is the friendships I have developed with other photographers.

To be a member of PPNC you must be a professional. So if for some reason I am must refer you to another photographer, then I will refer a fellow PPNC member. I know they are a professional and not just someone with a camera and that they will do a quality professional job for you; just as I would do.

But back to the convention. While at the convention I was honored to be sworn in as a Board member for PPNC. I take this position with the greatest honor and the vow to do the best job I can.

PPNC has meant so much to me and has helped me develop into the photographer I am today. I am reminded of a quote by W. Clement Stone; “If you are really thankful, what do you do? You share.” Hopefully I can give back to others what I have received.

On to more fun things. I did get a lot of ideas that I want to play with. Yes play – ‘cause we are going to have fun with these. At the same time we (oh btw, I volunteered you to help me with this) will be creating images needed for me to earn my Masters. To do this I must earn merits in print competition.

I have lots of ideas already of images to create. Some will be during regular sessions, some I will be doing model searches for and some I may even run special limited time only sessions for. We have less than a year to create the images and have them ready for the print competition. Guess we better end this blog post and get busy.

Last year the studio participated in the America’s Cutest Kid contests and had a great time. The contest raised $164,775 for Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. This year, we are going international!

The International Charity Model Search to select North America’s Cutest Family and to raise funds for the non-profit Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Foundation (NILMDTS.org) is going on.

I know I photograph the best and cutest families. Now is the time to prove your loved ones are North America’s Cutest Family? Many exciting prizes will be awarded, and the grand prize winner receives a new car!

Model Search Special:
$25 entrance fee includes a model session and one image submitted to the national gallery. Saturday sessions are available and receive 10% any portrait order from the model session.

New website new blog

Just wanted to let you know that I am building a whole new website and the blog will be moving to the actual website. I will leave this one up for all of the archived posts and will let you know here when the new site is up and running.

The old website was down for a little while last night and today, thanks to an oops on my part. Hopefully that won't happen again, but if you go to the site and it looks weird or it gives you some error you will know I did something again. I know it gave me a nice headache today. But when the new site is up; it will be so worth it.

It's Party Time Again!

That’s right the first facebook party was so much fun that we decided that night to do another one. We had thought about July or August, but we all had visions of sand between our toes and the cool breeze coming off the ocean. Ahhhh… now I want to go back to the beach.

So we are going to have another facebook profile party on Thursday, Sept. 17th at the studio from 6-8 pm. Come by and stay as long as you want. We will do a mini-session and from that you will get an image file to use for your profile portrait on facebook, myspace, linkedin, twitter or whatever you are online on.

Nancy Hunt will be back with all her pretty bling, bling! Nancy is an independent distributor for Premier Designs High Fashion Jewelry. They have some great new fall pieces.

This time we are going to have your Avon lady, Renee Bradshaw here. Renee will have some Avon samples for you to check out as well.

It is going to be lots of fun. Since it is a party, you know there will be food.

There is no admission charge, but if you could bring a donation of dog or cat food that would be great. During the month of September DCP is working with Catawba County Humane Society by collecting donations for their food pantry. With the economy the way it is, some families are struggling to be able to afford to feed their family pet. Many of these pets are brought to the shelter or worst abandoned. The food pantry gives food to families in need so they can feed their furry family member and not have to give them up.

Beautiful Sleeping Baby

I recently saw a news story on Good Morning America about beautiful sleeping baby images used in advertising. The story referred to the proper sleep position for babies to reduce the risks of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). A new article was released discussing the importance of having your baby sleep on their back and not on their stomach and/or on soft comforters, etc. Read the full story to find out about the recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on sleep positions for your baby.

Watching Sarah sleep when she was a baby is one of my fondest memories. I still love sleeping babies and capturing the sweet innocence of that quiet time. I always know we are going to have a special treasure for mommy when her little one falls asleep at the studio. Every parent should have a portrait like that. Take it from me, it becomes priceless. You will need that reminder of how sweet they can be, when you are trying to get them up for school in a few years.

Jailhouse FACES Exhibit

Earlier in the spring, I was asked to participate in a special exhibit for the Burke County United Way showcases the “FACES” of those involved in the United Way projects. It was an incredible honor to be one of a few photographers asked to do the photography for this project and during the month of June I went to some of the projects to do the photographs needed for the exhibit. I can say it was a lot of fun doing this and I met some incredible people. Our county really does have some wonderful people.

The projects United Way funds really do some incredible things for our community and the staff and volunteers of the United Way are hard working and caring people. We are fortunate to have them working to make our county a better place.

The exhibit is now on display at the Burke Arts Council’s Jailhouse Gallery on the square in downtown Morganton and will be there through the rest of August. Last night, they held a special exhibit reception and I got to see for the first time which images of mine they selected to use for the exhibit. The exhibit looks great. You really need to run by there and see it. It truly does put a face to the United Way.

While at the reception, I was able to meet the other two photographers that were selected to participate in this project; Kimberly Lajzar and Jeff Starks. It was a real pleasure getting to meet them and their work is great. I hope they had as much fun with this project as I did. I also got to see many old friends that I have not seen in years. Yes I know “me bad”, but it is always great to see them and hopefully it won’t be as long before we see each other again.

Of course everyone knows how much I love spending time in jail – the Jailhouse Gallery that is. It has been several years since my last exhibit there and I must say I love the changes to the gallery room the recent remodeling project did. Ann DiSanto, the staff and volunteers at the Burke Arts Council always do a great job in displaying exhibits and I always feel at home when I am in the jailhouse. Okay no smart comments on that…

Here are a few of my images you will see on display, but you really should check out the exhibit and let me know what you think. Visiting hours are 9-5 Tuesday through Friday. Hope to see you there!

School Days

While it is still hot and we are all still trying to enjoy every moment of the summer we can; before we know it the school bell will be ringing again and all of the children will be heading back to the classrooms. Unfortunately, some children will not have all of the school supplies they will need to do their school work.

We can help. Again, this August DCP will be collecting school supplies to be given out to children in need. As a thank you for your generosity, for every full bag of school supplies you bring in you will be given a gift card for a session that you can use any time in the future. On top of that if you schedule you session in August, then you will also receive a $25 gift card you can use towards your order from that session.

Since Sarah has been in school I have been very active and have served on committees. This has really opened my eyes as to how many children out there really do not have the simple items they need to learn and to grow. I can’t do much, but together we can. There is an old saying that I have no clue who said it first, but it takes a village to raise a kid. Sorry if I butchered the actual saying. You get my point though.

Below is just a short list of some items you can get and bring. I’ll even meet you some where to pick them up if you need me to. Many of you are school teachers. Spring is here and the weather is wonderful. I love this time of the year; being outside working in the garden and spending time in the hammock. Now that is living. But it is also a great time to go outside for those portrait sessions that we have been talking about. The temperatures are not too hot or cold and the bugs have not gotten too bad yet. It is time to get your session scheduled.

And do I have a deal for you!!! – Okay that sounded like a bad TV commercial, but it is true.

Regardless of where you want to have your session; your home, on your boat at the lake, your favorite park, you get the idea – during May and June your session fee is a mere $25 donation to Relay For Life. Each year DCP has a RFL promotion and since I am so eager to get outside this year, it is for on-location sessions.

Your session can be any time in May and June, but since I have to turn in the donations by the end of May all sessions must be scheduled by May 31st. Also if you want to help out the BCFFA food pantry drive too, then I got a very special deal for you. Sarah's Project: Pet Portraits With A Cause

It is a well known fact I am an animal lover. Just ask my husband if you don’t believe me. The bad thing for my husband is Sarah has taken my love for animals too. Reno, our lab, is definitely a big part of our family. I just love him so much, even if he just lies around all day and then gives me those sad eyes that melt my heart. Just like Sarah, he is my baby.

It hurts me to see animals mistreated or neglected. But it hurts me even more when I see someone who loves their animal and they are no longer able to take care of them. In a lot of these cases, the animal is their only companion during most days. In some of these cases the animals are giving up for adoption or even worst they are abandoned.

We are lucky to have incredibly caring individuals that try to help in such cases and try to find good homes for the animals they have under their care through our local humane societies. During May and June you can help DCP help stock the food pantry at the Burke County Friends For Animals so that they can give out this pet food to the families that need assistance in feeding some of their important members of their family.

Sarah and I are collecting donation of pet food, both dry and can to take up to the shelter for their food pantry. You can help by making a donation during May and June and in appreciation for your donation you will receive a free pet session. This session can be of just your pet or you and your pet or your whole family and that includes your pet. The session can be of any type animal, although if it is a snake - I’ll use my long lens. J

Sarah has challenged me to have to make multiple trips up there to take the food; so I need your help. Help me make sure I don’t let my little girl down or our furry friends.

National Teacher Winner

I am so thrilled to send out congratulations to a long time client and now friend, Paula Tate. Paula is a teacher at Draughn High School and was recently named Teacher of the Year at Draughn and now she has been awarded the First Freedom Teaching Excellent Award. You can read more about this national teaching award and Paula here.

Paula’s students secretly recommended her for this honor and she is so deserving of it. Over the years of knowing Paula, I have seen her dedication to her students. She is a true educator and perfect for the job. As a parent, I realize how lucky we are to have such wonderful teachers like Paula molding our children.

Over The Rainbow…

The Lord gives us some gifts some times. We just have to stop long enough to be able to see them and then to enjoy them. While helping Sarah with her homework, I glanced up and saw the most beautiful rainbow. We went out and enjoyed a double rainbow for a little while. One was very faint and one (the one here in the image) was very strong, but both very beautiful. I guess getting soaked while trying to mow grass earlier was worth it.

The Mountain Called And We Had To Go…

Every once in a while Sarah and I take a day and have a mommy & me day. We always have fun and it is really nice to have some fun time just me and her without worrying about housework or homework. This past week she was off for spring break from school so we took yesterday and went to one of our favorite places, Grandfather Mtn. Sarah loves to go spend time with the animals and will watch them for hours and I just love being on the mountain.

We could not have asked for better weather; well the photographer in me would have liked to have had some clouds in the sky. But otherwise it was awesome; not cold or hot, virtually no wind. Yes, my GFM photography friends; no wind. Hope that is the case in May for our weekend up there. The sky was a perfect solid Carolina Blue, no polarizer needed. I am sure that was just Hugh Morton’s way of celebrating UNCs becoming National Champs again! Yeah!!!!
One of my favorite quotes is by John Muir, “The mountains are calling and I must go.” I go to GFM (short for Grandfather Mtn) several times a year and wish I could be up there more. The mountain and the staff up there just make me feel like I am at home each time I am there. It was neat to see just how much progress has been made on the new gift shop on the top. Sarah is ready for it to open so she can go spend some money there.

I can remember the first time we took Sarah up there and she was scared to cross the bridge, but she did. Yesterday, I could not keep up with her skipping around on the rocks up there. She is really growing up and becoming more like me every day; yes a scary thing. I did beat her by finishing my ice cream sundae from the new fudge shop up there.

I am not sure where we will head for or when our next mommy & me day is, but I am sure looking forward to it. I am also sure we will be making another trip to GFM soon too. I will be heading up there to photograph a wedding, a family portrait session and for a photography weekend all in May and I can’t wait. In fact someone better hide my keys, I think I hear the mountain calling me…

America’s Cutest Kid – Vote For Me!

This is Zander. I have photographed him since he was just a baby and he is definitely one of America’s Cutest Kids in my book. Zander is participating in the national search for the cutest kid contest. This contest not only awards some really nice prizes (like a $5,000 US Savings Bond – I would love for Zander to win that!), but each vote (only $1) benefits a wonderful organization that is very dear to my heart; Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.

This is the image we select to use for the contest. It is from Zander’s “Model” session we did in downtown Hickory. Zander worked hard modeling for us and we all had a great time. I cannot think of a better way to have spent that morning. Although, I am still waiting on the recipe for Zander’s Mac n’ Cheese using Fruit Loops.

Happy St Patrick’s Day!!! Hope you are wearing green today.

I had a slight problem at the studio this morning. A little leprechaun named “Patty” ran around and caused a bunch of trouble. I finally caught him, but not before he had some fun. This is where I need your help.

Patty got into the website and apparently he left some messages for all of you. He has confessed to leaving 5 messages on the website each one on a different page, but he is not saying any more until his attorney gets here. Can you all help me find them so I can clean-up the website again?

Celebrate With Me

On March 2nd at the Professional Photographers of North Carolina’s convention; I took the Certified Professional Photographers (CPP) exam. I had been studying heavily for the past couple of months for this exam. While taking the exam the only thought I had was “this is not what I studied.” After finishing the exam I was left with the feeling of uncertainty on how I did; as did the others that took the exam with me. The past almost two weeks has been filled with wondering the outcome. Today I found out the results of the exam. I passed! Big sigh; yeah and even do a funny dance; mostly a big sigh.

Becoming Certified is a goal of mine. Less than 3% of all professional photographers have past the Certification process. It is a vigorous process that requires you to pass a comprehensive exam on the technical aspects and also submit images to a panel of judges for review and approval. I still have to submit my images. The next submission date is May 2nd, so I guess the next couple of months will still be filled with uncertainty.

But for tonight, I am celebrating passing the exam. And I want to share my excitement and make an offer to you. To celebrate I have decide to a have promotion that you can enjoy too. I am looking for cute children ages 18 months to 14 years old to model for a portrait to be entered into the contest. And I know there are some mighty cute kids out there. I have some great ideas for this.

Models Search Special:
$25 entrance fee (all of the entrance fee will be donated to Relay For Life), which includes a 30 minute model session and one image submitted to the national gallery.

Here Comes Peter Cottontail

That’s right it is time for those cute and cuddly bunnies. The bunnies will be at the studio one day only this year, Saturday March 28th. A new set is ready for this year that is simply adorable and it is perfect for kids of all ages. I can’t wait. It is going to be so much fun. Snow Cancels School!!!!

As most of you know school is out today for the snow. At least through out a good portion of North Carolina. Sarah is at home having fun, but I am not able to be there with her to enjoy it. I am in Raleigh with my second family at the Professional Photographers of NC Convention (PPNC).

I love coming here every year to get to meet all of my old (hehe) photography friends and to talk with them, laugh and of course eat (we all love to eat). But also to learn from some of the best photographers from across the nation. PPNC is known through out the country for having one of the best conventions every year with a line-up of speakers packed with talent. I will blog more about this later.

Right now I am getting ready to go take my Certification exam. It is at 1 today, so everyone send me good vibes. I have been fighting a cold for a while and still struggling with it, but I am rested and I think ready for the exam. I just hope I don't start second guessing my answers and change them. I have a tendency to do that when I take exams.

Sarah is getting a big laugh out of all of the studying I have been doing and the fact am having to take an exam while she is playing in the snow. Well when the warm weather returns I'll get her back.

Let's since I am stuck in here and not able to get out much to play in the snow send me some images like the last time it snowed and a little story and I'll post them on the blog.

Packed And Ready - Well Almost

Hi everyone. Tonight’s blog is going to be short and sweet. I just got home a little bit ago and have spent the time eating supper while trying to fix the internet. I think I have it about half-way fixed.

One week from today I will be in Raleigh with some (actually a whole bunch) really wonderful photographers; who I am lucky enough to call friends. The Professional Photographers of North Carolina’s convention starts next Saturday and I am so excited to be going. I always enjoy going and getting to study with some of the most talented photographers from across the nation. This year is not going to be any different. I am so excited about getting to attend programs from one of the top high school senior photographers in the nation, a program on fine art photography (yes I am going to find time this year to get back to some of that), a special program on maternity sessions (her work is breath-taking) and so many more. I am not sure I can sleep this week waiting to get there. On top of all of the programs, I get to spend time and talk with many photographers from across our state. I get so energized and full of ideas while I am there.

PPNC has one of the best trade shows around as well. There are always so many vendors that I can spend hours in there looking around at what all of the vendors are offering now. I am going to be looking out for some new items that I want to introduce here at the studio. I want to actually touch and see some of the things in person to make sure the quality is worth having.

Want to help me out? Give me some ideas of things you would be interested in and I will see if I can find it there at the trade show and see if it is something we can start doing here.

Yes I have been FRAMED!!!

Of course I have always sold frames, but I am really excited now that I have a frame corner display area. This has been a long time goal of mine, but it is finally a reality. A Special Request

Tonight’s blog post is a little different than I have ever done before. But on my way home just now I really felt I needed to write it. I apologizes if it is a bit too down for some and I am sure this breaks some rule on blogging, but I promise tomorrow the blog will be back to it’s normal fun self.

The past couple of weeks I have learned of several people I know that have lost a close family member unexpectedly. Tonight I learned of another. On top of that my family is facing the loss of a loved one too. My aunt is loosing her battle with cancer. I guess all of this got me really thinking tonight on my drive home.

I want to take this opportunity to really let each of you know how I feel about you. How much I appreciate each of you being in my life and how much of an impact each of you have in helping me be the person I am. It does not matter if you are a family member of mine, a dear close friend, a client (in which many of you are dear friends now) or just some one that just happens to be reading this blog post; I want to let you know I truly care about and I am grateful for each of you. You are always in my thoughts and prayers during the good times and bad. I pray that God protects, blesses and gives you joy and happiness.

I ask only one thing of you tonight. Take the time to call, email, write a note and mail it, or simply go in the other room and give that person a hug and let them know how much you care about them. If there is someone you haven’t told that too lately, then do it. In today’s busy world it is so easy to put it off till another day, but I ask that this time you don’t.

Help Me Out & Become Famous

Today I need you to help me out. I am getting ready to start working on the next newsletter that will be mailed out in March and as you know we have a section called “Your Corner.” The section is where you get to share some knowledge about an area you are an expert on or share something that would be useful to everyone else.

What I need is for each of your to share something with everyone else. All you have to do is pick a subject and write a few paragraphs on it and email it to me. If I get a whole bunch then I’ll save some for the rest of this year’s newsletters and will start using some in the e-newsletters and on the blog.

Not sure what you can write about? If you are a kindergarten teacher than send me a piece on how to prepare your kid for starting school Older grade teacher, how about how your kid and you can survive the EOGs (please someone do this one for me!!!!). If you are a chef, then how about something on low cost nutritional meals that taste good or something like quick meal tips. Are you a mechanic? Then send me tips on getting your car ready for the summer. Are you getting the idea?

Can't Help But Smile At This Cutie

This cutie is Lathan. His grandmother brought him in back right around Christmas, told you I was a bit behind on blogging about some sessions, for his first Christmas portraits. He is definitely a sweetie. Loves his trains just like his daddy.

We had a great time during his session. He was so cute in his Christmas outfit and we even managed to find some snow laying around the studio for him to play in. I sure hope he got the chance to get out in the little bit of the real stuff we have had. And if we all cross our fingers, maybe Lathan will have a chance to help make his first snowman either tomorrow or this weekend. Grandmother will have to send me some pictures of him out in the snow.

14 Days of Love

Okay so what is the deal with the “14 Days of Love”?

We all know the song “12 Days of Christmas.” You know the song, so sing it with me “on the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me…” This famous song is just like most things dealing with a holiday; lots hype counting down to the holiday and then when the holiday gets here it is like someone flips a switch and it is all over but cleaning up the mess. I have never liked that.

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day; the day of love. So how about letting the love flow? That is just what we are going to do for the next 14 days. Why 14? Valentine’s Day is on the 14th and there are 14 days left in this month, plus it just sounded good.

For the rest of the month, I will be posting a new blog post each day. Some will be about interesting stuff and some helpful tips I have found and want to share. Plus there will be some posts on some recent sessions I have not had a chance to share with you, some updates on what is going on and coming up with the studio and some things that I am working on that I am really excited about. And there will be some special offers just for those that are reading the blog each day. I am even going to ask for your help with some of this. I think this is going to be a lot of fun. My Little Girl

I really enjoy creating beautiful images for all of you, but once in a while I get to create one for me. The other day my little girl, yes I know she is not that little any more, allowed me a few minutes to do some images of her. This is one that we did. I just love it. It is after all, my little girl.

Ella's First Real Snow

There is nothing like watching a kid really figure out what snow is and how to play in it. Here are some images of Ella playing in her first real snowfall sent to me from her mom, Mandy.

I have photographed Ella since she was just a few days old and it was so cool seeing these images of her out in the snow. I would say she is a real snow angel.

I wish I could have been there to see Ella running around and having fun, but that is the beauty of photographs; we can share in on the fun through them. Thanks Mandy for letting me be a part of your family.

Let It Snow

Those of you in the area probably heard the loud sonic boom last night when Sarah realized it was finally snowing. After a whole day of asking me when is it going to start snowing, how much is it going to snow and if it is going to be the sticky type of snow; she finally got her wish and it started snowing. I am sure that was the wish every kid around.

We did not get much, just a couple of inches, but she was out in it bright and early this morning. I went out for a little while and played a little too (my style). 5-4-3-2-1 We have lift off of the Doodlebugs

The wait is finally over. The much anticipated launch of the Doodlebug Club has finally arrived. The funest (is that a word?) kids club around, the Doodlebug Club is designed for kids ages 2 to 7 and is designed for the kids (okay me too) having pure fun and there are lots of special perks just for the Doodlebugs. Yes, mom and dad you get to join in on some of these perks too and if you behave you can have some fun also. The perks for joining the club are too numerous to list here. But call the studio and I will be glad to fill you in on them and all of the other details about the club.

When you sign up your kid to be a Doodlebug, they will receive a special membership packet in the mail. Included in the packet will be a special Doodlebug Club membership card with your child’s personal membership id number on there. There will be a bunch of other goodies in the packet as well.

Oh, two more things; if you sign your child up between now and the end of January you will receive as an introductory bonus gift a custom designed dry erase board (see the sample here) from your first Doodlebug session.

And last; if your kid is not yet 2 and you would like to go ahead and join the Doodlebug Club to receive all the benefits from the ages 2 to 7 (we’ll go ahead and start the benefits now – just don’t tell my boss) then give me a call. I don’t want you to miss out on the special introductory bonus of the custom dry erase board just because your sweetie isn’t two yet.

The launch is here and the Doodlebug Club is officially having fun, but not as much fun without your kid being a part of it. Keeping In Touch

The January enewsletter just went out and it got me thinking. Is everyone that wants to receive the monthly enewsletter on the list to receive it? If you are suppose to be receiving it and are not or if you want to start receiving it, please send me an email and let me know. I will make sure you get on the mailing list.

Also, just to let you know the printed newsletter has not been forgotten with all of this modern online technology. It is scheduled to go out three times a year. I am actually going to start working on putting the first 2009 printed newsletter together so you can read it in March. I do need your help though. I need to get someone to write a piece for the “Your Corner” section. If you have something you would like to share, please send it to me. Send it in an email will be great. Hey, I just had an idea; since it is still close to the New Years and we all know about the famous resolution, if someone has something about loosing weight or healthier eating – that would be great. Send in your healthy and delicious recipes and I will include as many as I can in the printed newsletter and the rest on the blog. Okay now I am getting hungry.

School's Out!

On Monday January 19th school is out and the banks are closed, so it is a perfect opportunity for that session you have been trying to find the time for. And Sarah is so excited about being out of school; she said “do something special mom”, so no session fee for any session on Monday the 19th. Bring the kids for that special portrait of them or bring the whole family.
It is also a great time to come in for a mini-Senior session and get some incredible images that will not be like any of your classmates.

The Brannocks

Back in the fall I had the chance to meet and photograph a wonderful family, the Brannocks, for their Christmas cards. And did they ever have a beautiful Maple tree to use for their backdrop. I wish I could take that tree to my place. Of course the tree paled in comparison to how beautiful this family is. Jeanne, Hannah and Seth were a delight to work with. They really made Sarah and I feel like we had known them forever.
I don’t think we could have picked a better day for the fall colors for their session. The trails in their woods were perfect to get Hannah and Seth off with the other family members; Mini Z, Violet and Peaches. Of course you know Sarah had fun with the dogs and Mini Z seemed to really like me too.

The Abernathy's And A Thank You To A Sailor

Here is a fun family that I am glad I have gotten to know. They sure know how to have a blast together.

Randal and Elaine have done a great job raising these kids. Stephen is a fine young man and Hailey and Jessica are turning into beautiful young women.It was an honor to photograph Stephen in his uniform. You can really tell he is proud to be a sailor in our Navy and serve his country. We should all take a moment this holiday season and say a little prayer for all of our troops and their families; so many of them are not able to be with their families this year because they are serving us. It is because of the men and women like Stephen that I am able to do what I love to do for my career, sleep in my bed at night without worrying about a bomb going off and that my child will grow up in a country that has so much more freedom than any other country on this earth. Thank you Stephen and all of your fellow servicemen and women; may God Bless you and protect each and every one of you.

Watching Ella Grow

One of the joys of my job is to get to watch so many wonderful families grow and watch their kids get bigger each time we do another session. I feel lucky to not only be able to photograph these changes, but to become a small part of their family as well. Here are some images from the past year or so from one such family.
It is hard to believe that Ella was ever this small now. We did this one when she only a few days old.

She is definitely a daddy’s girl.

But she loves her mommy too.

Christmas Fun

Oh I love this time of year. Christmas carols on the radio, candy canes, spending time with family and friends and most importantly reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas.

And as you all know me there is some Christmas fun to be had. I wanted to share with you some fun and free online activities you can do to kill a little more time at work till Christmas or to just have some fun with some friends or family members.

Here is one I found out about last year and they have improved it. It is through Office Max http://www.elfyourself.com/ I did this using some of my dearest friends and thought about sharing it with you all, but they have ammo they could use as revenge. So try it out with some of your friends and family and see just how well they can dance.

The second one is one I found this year and it is from Ace Hardware http://aceyourface.acehardware.com/ace/index.jsp This one let's you build your holiday portrait; that is if you did not make it into the studio for one this year. But hey it is a load of fun to do, so give it a try.

The last one I have is one I just found out about this morning from a friend up in Canada (she is getting a ton of snow today -wish, wish, wish) http://portablenorthpole.sympatico.msn.ca/home/ This is a cool way for your kid to get a personal video message from Santa himself. I did one for Sarah for when she got home from school.

It is parade season. This Saturday, December 6th is full of them. Sarah and I will be hitting the Hildebran one and the one in Hickory and hope to see you there.
